Celine Dion: My Heart Will Go On Lyrics
Songwriters: Horner, James; Jennings, Will
Every night in my dreams
I see you. I feel you.
That is how I know you go on.
Far across the distance
And spaces between us
You have come to show you go on.
Near, far, wherever you are
I believe that the heart does go on
Once more you open the door
And you're here in my heart
And my heart will go on and on
Love can touch us one time
And last for a lifetime
And never let go till we're gone
Love was when I loved you
One true time I hold to
In my life we'll always go on
Near, far, wherever you are
I believe that the heart does go on
Once more you open the door
And you're here in my heart
And my heart will go on and on
You're here, there's nothing I fear,
And I know that my heart will go on
We'll stay forever this way
You are safe in my heart
And my heart will go on and on
This song is the love theme for the movie Titanic. The purpose of the song is to show that love is everlasting; it will stick with you forever, not matter if you are separated or not. This song’s main appeal is to the emotions of the audience. It uses very descriptive word choice which causes you to feel like you are right there, experiencing the emotion she is feeling. In the song, there are words such as “feel,” “touch” and “see.” These words create a feel that you are actually there. They give you presence in the song. These words also cause you to believe in the type of love being described in the song. It makes the everlasting love not seem so far off. These descriptive words leave the audience in no doubt as to how love can last forever. The words reach into your soul, pulling out the emotions of love that everyone longs for. These words are effective to create the atmosphere of love. I know that every time I listen to this song, the words pierce my soul and cause me to hope that this type of love is true.
Another strategy that this song employs to strengthen its purpose is the use of personification. In the song it says, “Love can touch us one time, and last for a lifetime, and never let go till we’re gone.” These few lines give love a human feel. It makes the love seem tangible. This is exactly what the song wants. It wants the audience to believe in this everlasting love. One way to do this is to make the love seem real as if it could breath and stand next to you. Using personification creates this feeling. By saying that love can “touch us” and it “will never let go,” we almost can see it as a human who is there holding on to us, never letting us go. This creates a powerful appeal to the emotions because it makes it seem so real. The love evident and will be there always.
The use of descriptive word choice and personification effectively bring the purpose of the song alive. Before analyzing this song, I thought of it as touching, heartfelt love song. But after my analysis, I see this song as so much more. Yes, it does appeal greatly to my emotions, but it makes me physically feel there. I can feel this love and know that it’s real. It seems as if I can touch it and make it happen in my life. I’ve never really thought about how love really can touch us and stay forever. But it is true. This song makes it feel that way. Obviously it is more than the song that can create this feeling; one must use their imagination a bit too. But overall, this song creates the feeling and hope that love can truly be everlasting.
This song is beautiful! I have never actually seen Titanic, but I have heard the song countless times. I like how it shows us that love can go on forever :)
ReplyDeleteThis is a pretty sad song, I would have to say. One of my friends from high school really hated this song though. He would moan super load when sung it around him. So of course I would hum it whenever I got the chance.
ReplyDeleteI really like this song. It was awesome how you touched on the purpose of the song and supporting great analysis. I enjoyed reading about the emotions associated to this song, because obviously there are a lot. I agree that there is so much more to the song more than we actually think. I really want to listen to this song now.
ReplyDeleteHow could anyone not love this song? My sister and I used to sing it over and over when we were younger and miserably fail in comparison to Celine Dion's unmatched abilities. But it's always been one of my favorite songs and always will be. It's so powerful in the diction and personification - good job pointing that out. There's so much raw emotion in this song; I love it!
ReplyDeleteI love Celine Dion, there really isn't anybody that compares to her. However, I have heard this song everywhere so many times, that I really am kind of sick of it. I love how you analyzed the meaning of it though, because the next time I hear it, it will be in a whole different light!
