However...it can be counter argued that the media is actually having a somewhat positive effect in doing this. A reason for this could be that the advertising of extremely skinny and beautiful girls is causing other girls to want to look this way. And as we all know, America is disgustingly overweight, so maybe it is good motivation for women to lose weight because they want to look like the models. I also know that the diet industry brings in about 30 billion dollars a year because of everyone trying to lose weight. They will literally try anything. So it is definitely having a positive effect on the income of the diet industry. And of course women will want to lose weight when they see how thin these models in magazines are...so maybe this is a positive effect that the advertising industry is creating. Therefore we solve the obesity problem, atleast among women.
That's not a very good counter argument, but that's what I could come up with as a counter argument for my issue.
Lol! I'm sorry, but you could tell that the words we're being pulled from you and there was a sarcastic undertone. I really liked it though because it was funny. Obesity is a problem, but so is anorexia...we all have a hard time finding a healthy problem. And I'm sure the media's inaccurate portrayal of women only exacerbates both issues by influencing women to starve themselves, or be so depressed by their image that they eat more.
ReplyDeletePersonally, I think it's unattractive when girl's become so thin that you can see their rib cages. Obesity and anorexia or both issues that are being portrayed in a harmful way through the media. Becoming like a model probably isn't a great motivation to have for people, because I've heard counselors say that anorexia becomes an addiction to some. It is hard to have counter-arguments.
ReplyDeleteI agree, this is a difficult topic to come up with a conter-argument for. Even if a girl is motivated to lose weight by these advertisements, she most likely won't do it in a healthy manner.
