Week 12: Onions are like people. They have layers.

My entire life I have hated onions. I couldn't eat them in soup or on sandwiches or in roasts or anything. I hated the taste, and I hated the texture. I hated the way they made me cry when I had to cut them. As far as I could tell, there was NOTHING good about onions.

My grandpa lives on about 10 acres in California, and he rents out most of his land to a farmer. He grows all sorts of fruits and vegetables, including onions. But they aren't just any onions. They are big, juicy, onions. They are kind of spicy and sweet at the same time. They are incredible.

My grandpa made a big dinner, with onion as the main dish. I was super unhappy, but my mom made me try some... and it was INCREDIBLE! Now I just can't get enough red onions. I'm still not a fan of white, yellow or green onions. But give me a red onion and I will find a way to eat it. I love them sauteed with squash. I love them grilled on steaks. I love them in the slow cooker with a roast. I love them in soup. I love them fried. I've even eaten them plain with just some dip.

I am kind of frustrated with myself that I went almost 18 years of my life without onions. They are my favorite food! I guess sometimes we just have to look beneath the first layer to find the best part.

  1. I love that onions are your favorite food! I definitely can say that I have never heard before that someones favorite food is onions. I like your background story too, it really added to your reasoning! Also, I don't think you should be disappointed that you went 18 years without onions, because you have a lot more years ahead of you :)

  3. I love the movement of this history; I'm left wanting some details, though. When you were young, did you hate onions literally (as in, you tried them and hated them) or did you just think you hated them and refused to try them, as kids often do? Also, what kind of onion main dishes are there out there? Do you mean there was lots of onion in the main dish, or the onion was actually some kind of main dish? And finally, how long ago did your grandpa make that meal, and was the reason you tried it really because your mom made you, or was there some other motivation; maybe you were curious?

Fun entry. Great unique favorite food. :)

  4. I have always wanted to try eating an onion just raw. My friend has tried it, and he said that he had to brush his teeth a billion times before his breath to smell good. Your title was very interesting, it made me want to read your post. Good job!

  5. Wow, way to make food profound and nice Shrek reference ;) Least that's where I recognize it from. And I can definitely relate to this - I used to hate onions too, any type or form, but over the past few years I've come to love them (and red onions are my favorite). They really have so many useful purposes :) like being metaphors..

  6. I love squash and onions! I used to hate onions too. I think it's like one of those things that as a kid you are expected to hate-- kind of like spinach or brussel sprouts.

  7. I'm not the biggest onion person. But I work at the creamery and my favorite thing to do is to chop up the grilled onions! Great blog!
