Week 5: Carrie

One of the songs that I like, and that has a lot of meaning would be that of the glorious Carrie Underwood. I have a deep crush on this woman. Not just because she is very beautiful and talented, but because of the meaning and lyrics she puts in her songs. A particular song I enjoy is the one called, "Change." This song (and pretty much all of Carrie's songs) are pretty girly, but I'm not afraid to admit that I very much enjoy her as a musician. In the chorus of "Change" it reads: "You're just a fool, just a fool to believe you can change the world. Don't listen to 'em when they say you're just a fool, just a fool. To believe you can change the world, oh the smallest thing can make all the difference." These words are very inspiring to read for an individual. In this ever demanding, and critical world it can be hard to go out and help someone or change something. The world's views on things are becoming seemingly more harsh, but this song says to go against that and do your best to change the world for the better. When someone else is being negative and putting down your charitable ideas, you should stick it to 'em and play this song. When others in this world think your being crazy for standing up for something, Carrie simple eludes to not listening to them. The smallest of things such as giving your 36 cents to a homeless person can make the biggest difference. There is a lot of pathos in this statement and everybody can relate to it. This song does a great job in providing lots of pathos. Many appeals to the ethos side of things can be seen as well. It is sung by Carrie Underwood for heck sakes. Who else would you rather hear this song sung by? She is like at the top of the most caring, charitable people in the world right now. This sweetheart backs up her stuff in the way she acts and presents herself. This song is very inspiring and has a great message that everyone in the world can learn from.

  1. I appreciate the message of that song too. It gives me a little more motivation to actually try to do something with this college education I'm receiving!

  2. I love how you talked about pathos and ethos! (The ethos part was pretty funny, how you were like "just because.") It would be nice if you added an example of how she is charitable, like, did she help with a specific charity? Anyways, I can agree with the pathos because I feel good when read those lyrics, like somebody has my back. It's nice. Good song choice! :)

  5. Post song lyrics?

So here's where you can push analysis deeper: the song has a good message, but WHY does it have a good message? Why does saying "You're just a fool, just a fool to believe you can change the world. Don't listen to 'em when they say you're just a fool, just a fool. To believe you can change the world, oh the smallest thing can make all the difference" have that impact? What if she changed her wording slightly? How does "fool" make you feel, in contrast to "the smallest thing can make all the difference"? What if she said the same thing in different words? The trick is to figure out why a certain combination of words, why all those subtle connotations and denotations can make you feel the way you do.
