Unwritten

Every so often an artist or a composer will strike gold. Through their music and lyrics they create a lasting message, one that will ring true and inspiring for years to come. Natasha Bedingfield has created such a masterpiece. Her song, Unwritten, is one of my favorites because it's message is so applicable and true to everyone's life.
I am unwritten
Can't read my mind
I'm undefined

I'm just beginning
The pen's in my hand
Ending unplanned

She uses the analogy of our lives being like a journal or a book where our experiences are continuously being written down. Our lives don't start out already planned, like she says we are ''unwritten'.
I break tradition
Sometimes my tries
Are outside the lines

We've been conditioned
To not make mistakes
But I can't live that way, no

These two particular verses have always been special to me. Life isn't about staying inside the lines doing things that other people want me to do; we all need to be unique and do things our own way.
Staring at the blank page before you
Open up the dirty window
Let the sun illuminate the words
That you could not find

Reaching for something in the distance
So close you can almost taste it
Release your inhibitions
Feel the rain on your skin

No one else can feel it for you
Only you can let it in
No one else, no one else
Can speak th
e words on your lips

The rest is still unwritten.

The main message of this song in a nutshell: get out and discover what your life can really be like without letting others make your choices for you. Be adventurous, open that new window of the undiscovered world and let yourself live life how you want to live it.

  1. I also really like this song. At first I simply liked it because it was catchy and had a good beat. But then, I actually listened to the words and was impressed with the meaning behind them. I heard her talking on the radio about this song and she actually wrote it for her brother. Her brother was where we were last year, and where we are still today: at a point in life when there are many big decisions to make. This song is very appropriate for us at this time in our lives.

  2. I have always loved this song, but I have never actually thought about it that deeply. It is definitely a great song.
