Miserably Loving You
By: Artist vs Poet
Another day, another day I decide to
Waste away and contemplate how
Everything has changed.
And though we tried, not to compromise what burns inside
Your complex mind that changes everyday.
Emily, please, there's nothing wrong with the way I light up when you're around.
Do anything you want, but don't leave me out.
Emily, please, just get closer to me.
A month went by, a month that I can't describe,
A month I've been trying to push aside and forget in time.
And now we are inches away, but we're miles apart,
So I'll dream of the day and how we felt at the start.
But dreams don't come easy these days,
And the colors, they fade into grays.
These deep breaths repeating
She's determined to start a fight.
These deep breaths repeating
The sun has yet to set and you're not here to say good night.
Emily, please, there's nothing wrong with the way I light up when you're around.
Do anything you want, but don't leave me out.
Emily, c'mon, this was going somewhere,
I won't let go of what we had
'Cause I'm a broken record that keeps on skipping back.
And I still miss her.
And I never thought that you'd leave me here all on my own.
And I never thought you'd be willing to take away my home.
'Cause there's no one to call and I'm so sick of being all alone.
And I'm stuck miserably loving you.
Emily, please, there's nothing wrong with the way I light up when you're around.
Do anything you want, but don't leave me out...
Emily, c'mon, this was going somewhere,
I won't let go of what we had.
Now I'm a broken record that keeps on skipping back.
Emily, please, just get closer to me.

This and the last post I posted are lyrics I wrote for my good friend's band Artist vs Poet back in Dallas. I guess with this one, I was aiming it so that most people could relate: someone who's simply miserable loving SOMEONE, whether it be a family member, significant other, good friend, whoever. The relativity of it helps dig crazy deep into the listener's heart and encourages some personal reflection of their own exact situation. Honest to goodness when I was writing this, I had a specific person in mind but I didn't want to say who it was. So I chose the name Emily. 100% random, no personal meaning whatsoever.
Anyways..
every person in the world has been in the situation of giving so much and caring so much more about someone but not received what he (or she) was putting in. The contrast of dreams and actuality, inches away but miles apart, colors fading to gray, these all put into perspective the reality of the situation.
The imagery of the broken record skipping back represents the cycle of loving but not being loved in return. Imagining this person sitting alone trying to find meaning in their state of loneliness increases the emotional connection and the story in the listener's head paints a painting of blue.
We're actually in the process of shooting this music video and the end consists of a young guy playing guitar singing this song on a lawn outside "Emily's" window. She opens the blinds and sees him, but we're still trying to decide whether we want her to open the window and let him in or whether we want the blinds to close and the lights go out..
What do you guys think? How would you end the story?
I had never heard this song before but I went and listened to it and it's great! I think it could describe a LOT of people in the world who are miserably loving someone who doesn't love them back. As for the ending of your video, I say the girl should let him in. Happy endings are always the best!
ReplyDeleteWait you wrote these!! That's awesome. I love the lyrics so much. This line is my fav. "there's nothing wrong with the way I light up when you're around."
ReplyDeletePs. I think she should open the window and smile at him. :)
ReplyDeletei think she should shut the blinds.
ReplyDeleteIts more realistic and captivates the feeling more.
if she lets him in, its like taking back everything he was singing about.
I am impressed you wrote this. Man, I wish I was more musically gifted. Anyways, you should end the video with her not letting him in, then you could make another song about how he found someone better and more worthwhile. Make for a great next video. haha
ReplyDeleteSo I definitely commented on this, but idk what happened. Oh well. Umm yeah, this is amazing, and so applicable to like everyone's life at some point. I wanna see the music video when it is done! hmm...i think that she should open the window cuz that would be happy :) but most likely in real life she would shut the blinds...:(
