I love lamp. I’m not just talking about any lamp; I’m talking about my lamp. We first met the summer before the beginning of my 7th grade year. I was in the market for a lamp, but nothing had really struck me as “the lamp”. But on that summer afternoon at Home Depot, and as I turned my head, my eyes beheld the most beautiful image I have ever seen. It wasn’t the fanciest lamp by any means, nor was it the most technologically advanced. Other lamps offered greater spreading of light, longer extension of the power cord, or more aesthetically pleasing designs and colors. But none of those factors seemed to matter as I gazed upon the delightfully simple, shiny black desk lamp that would soon be deemed “the lamp”. It’s not that the other lamps weren’t appealing, it’s just there was something different about Kevin (oh, my lamp’s name is Kevin). Kevin has never let me down. How often have you turned a dial to a lamp, only to have nothing happen until you click it once or twice more? What kind of lamp does that?! Not Kevin. He is always willing to share what he has to offer, and he only needs one click of the switch to do it.
Kevin was there for me during those long nights of homework. Kevin helped show me the way when I got up at 3 a.m. for a ham & cheese hotpocket. When I couldn’t sleep, he was the one that erased the fear of darkness. When I dropped my hotpocket under my bed, who helped me find it? You guessed it. And how many light bulbs did Kevin eat up over a six year period? Not even one; it’s the same light bulb I gave him six years ago. He’s energy conscience and efficient! Now reaching seven years of service (that’s like 63 lamp years) you’ve probably assumed Kevin has served his commission and is retired; well think again. Not only is he still going, he’s as bright as ever. The firm relationship that I’ve made with this little guy is one that I will cherish forever. I hope that you can feel one eighth of the love and appreciation that I have for this, my best lamp and friend.
I feel like you should be supplying a picture here so we can share in the most beautiful image you have ever seen. Your description is pretty convincing; most of my lamps are apathetic and sulky. I wish we could all have a lamp as faithful as Kevin.
ReplyDeleteI liked when you said, "I was in the market for a lamp," "Kevin helped show me the way," and "I hope that you can feel one eighth of the love...." So funny! One-eighth! My lamp sounds like yours. It's black and simple, with a bendy neck. (I'll call it a neck. :) )
ReplyDelete"Do you really love lamp or are you just saying that cause you saw it?" But I agree with teach, a picture would be nice! I wish I could have such an attachment to an inanimate object :(
