Week 3: Mountains

I feel like I keep getting freebies for this assignment because I can just refer to my simple pleasure/(pet peeve) list for ideas of what to write about. One of my favorite simple pleasures is living near the mountains. I was born and raised here in Utah and I love it here. I know that Utah is the subject of a lot of mockery and jokes but it's my home turf. While everyone is partial to the place they grew up, Utah really is gorgeous. Most of you probably hate it right now because it can get frigid, I'll give you that. However, if you've never been on a drive up the canyon in the Summer, don't judge Utah too harshly just yet. There's nothing like it. Want to get a girl to fall for you in approximately 5 minutes? Want a cool place to have a bonfire with some friends? Want a place to be alone and clear your head? How about somewhere to have a super cool spiritual experience with your scriptures? Head up the canyon. Any canyon. They're all good. Some of my best memories from high school happened up Little or Big Cottonwood canyons. We would star gaze on Summer nights, camp in the Fall, roast marshmallows and hotdogs in the Winter, and hike in the Spring. This doesn't even take skiing and snowboarding into account. "The Greatest Snow On Earth" isn't down here under all the Utah inversion. It's at the Ski Resorts. Most of you probably don't intend to stay here for the rest of your lives. You may even be counting down the days until you can get out. (I think you're crazy. If I never left it wouldn't bother me for a second). Please hear me out though. For the time you are here, learn to ski or snowboard. Don't be one of those people who can say they have lived in Utah but can't do any snow sports. The recreation here isn’t non-existent! It’s up in those beautiful pointy rocks in the distance! Drive to Park City, go to Squaw Peak (wink, wink), go to a ski resort! Just go enjoy while you’re here. I promise you’ll learn to love--or at least tolerate--Utah if you do. True, people from here can't pronounce the actual word right. You have to admit though, that one thing we have going for us is great mountains...(Utah pronunciation: mau-ins)

  1. Mountains are pretty fantastic. I come from Minnesota where we have small hills and lakes. I've got family in California, though, and when we flew over the Rockies to get there, it was definitely the most beautiful part of the flight. I do miss the ponds scattered every square mile or so in my neighborhood, however. Water is gorgeous. Waterfalls on mountains, though... that's where it at.

  2. There is nothing better than flying home to my house in Salt Lake and seeing the GORGEOUS mountains. I have lived here in Utah all my life but have spent a few summers in the south and miss seeing them everyday. It seems like such a simple thing but it makes it home!

  4. I agree! I am a California girl for sure, but yes i'll give it to you... Utah is beautiful. There is no other place like it. One day when I am old I want to have a cabin up in Midway and just live there a few months of the year.
