Week 4: Legitimate

The word legitimate isn't necessarily my favorite word, but it's a word that I feel like can be very diversly used. I think the most I ever heard the word legitimate was probably my junior year of high school. Instead of saying legitimate though, it was shortened to legit. At that point, everything became "legit" to students at my school. I think the best part was when teachers started catching on and proclaiming something was "legit" in class. This word is probably so striking because of the validity of the word. If you call something legitimate, no one can really contradict that statement. It's a really powerful and strong word; thus the reason I probably like it so much.
The word reminds me a lot of friends that I had growing up in high school and brings back so many funny conversations. We would abuse the word to the point where the average person would probably get really annoyed with it, but we did not. "Legit" became the biggest compliment. If legitimate was a smell like fresh cut grass, because it's so clean cut and perfect. And because I really like that smell. If it had a taste it would be a long the lines of salsbury steak or mashed potatoes. Legitimate feels like a marble, one that's completely flawless and maybe even cold.

  1. To me this means, it counts, its accepted as fitting. Michael Phelps is legitimately the greatest Olympic Swimmer ever, no one can legitimately challenge that claim. It is real, it is accepted, it isn't up for debate.

  3. I also love this word because like what Chad said, this word is pretty much irrefutable in a sense that it is hard to argue with.

  4. This seems like the word I chose (literal). I like this word too, but more for it's definition of "conforming to laws and rules." It makes it funny when it's used to describe inconsequential things, kind of like adding emphasis, like, "How do you know?" "I saw it on the legitimate website!" Ha ha :) Maybe I misuse it, more or less, as a synonym for genuine? Hm...

  5. When you said how the word brought back memories of high school, I also had some flashbacks. My friends and I would always use legit for everything, and somehow it never got old. I like this word too, because it is exactly what it says it it. Legitimate means it is the real deal, nothing else matches up or compares.
