The Testing Center Rocks My Socks
When I first started college in June I went straight into my new job at the Testing Center. All four of my sisters who went to BYU worked there. They were really good and the testing center really liked them. A few years later I myself came to BYU. Because of their reputation, I got a job and started working my second week of school. I was kind of nervous, I didn’t know what to expect. I went in and got trained, the people were pretty nice. It was only after checking in a few test takers that I realized I would love this job.
Once I wasn’t nervous and I knew how things worked my experience really took off. When checking people in I made this goal to make everyone I checked in laugh before they took their test. I sometimes would tell them random funny stories about my day; ask them funny questions, anything to make them laugh. I was helping them out since a lot of them are stressed and laughing would lower their stress which would make feel good for helping. Also, an even better reason, by making them laugh they would remember my face. I could then walk around campus and people would recognize me. I might meet a group of people and someone would recognize me but not remember where they remembered me from. I would say that I worked and the testing center then they would remember. This really helped when the people I was checking in would be really good looking. If a good looking girl came in, I would be extra funny; this got me many connections.
The testing center is also awesome because of the people who work there. During the summer, the employees are mostly older and married. I always thought people who were married were really mature and boring. Totally not true, I almost felt like I was hanging out with people my own age. We would always play music, talk about school, and I got a lot of good advice. They also thought I was super funny, mostly when I hit on the girls that came in. Even though we weren’t always busy during the summer, we all made it enjoyable.
A lot of people get nervous about the testing center. Most people, obviously, only go there to take test. Especially when people are new, they are nervous about how it works. The testing center is so helpful that if you only tell a worker that you are new, they’ll give you a little summary of everything you need to know. We are all really nice and we will protect you from cheaters. Next time you go to the testing center, just remember how much of a special and innovative place it is. It is even the most holy building on campus, since more prayers are said in that building than any other. Maybe one day you’ll cherish you memories from the testing center as I do mine.
I hope when I go in to take my math test someone is working who will tell me a funny joke! This is an awesome blog entry and I was definitely laughing as I read it. I like your style of writing. Can't wait to see what you do next week.
ReplyDeleteI love the testing center! I used to dread taking tests but, in my opinion, the testing center makes tests a lot less stressful for me, for some reason. I like that you made it your goal to make people laugh before they went in to take their tests. When I would take tests in the summer, some of the people who checked me in made me laugh too. That made the whole test-taking process a lot more laid back. I'm glad you do the same!
ReplyDeleteDespite the length, I thoroughly enjoyed this. Humor rocks. It helps soothes and makes stressful situations a lot easier. Like whenever someone makes you made, but then adds a joke, it somehow lowers the intensity of the upsetness. Whether upsetness is a word I don't know, but oh well. It works.
