I have two really big pet peeves that have to do with the same things. The first one is when the lights are on during a movie. That drives me crazy! There are many reasons why it bothers me so much when someone leaves the lights on during a movie. For one, it’s so much harder to see the screen when the lights are shining a glare on the TV. Another reason is that if you’re watching the movie with someone you like, for example your boyfriend or girlfriend, it is extremely awkward when everyone can clearly see the two of you cuddling. And if the lights are off, it’s a lot more discrete. Also when I watch movies, I just like the feeling of being in the dark because it allows me to be able to zone in on the movie more and be able to focus. And aside from that, I just love being in the dark because it’s relaxing.
My other big pet peeve is when somebody turns the lights on right after the movie ends. It’s very irritating to me, and everyone I think, when your eyes are adjusted to the room being dark, and then all of the sudden the lights go on and you’re practically blinded! Also, a lot of times when it is late at night and I am really tired, I fall asleep while watching a movie. So I don’t want to be woken up by the light being turned on. I came to discover these pet peeves because my dad is guilty of both of them, especially turning the light on right after a movie ends. But some times, I yell “don’t turn the lights on!” to remind him. For the most part, I think people agree with how annoying both of these pet peeves are, so they don’t do them. But occasionally someone will leave the lights on and I just get up and turn them off because it bothers me that much! Or like I said I’ll just yell to keep the lights off. So those are my two big movie watching pet peeves.
This made me laugh. I think most people would generally agree with you on this topic. I absolutely HATE the glare of the lights on the screen, that is what bugs me the most about leaving lights on during a movie. Sometimes, however, I would rather keep a few lights on because otherwise I get too scared. For example, during scary movies. I hate scary movies, but I hate them even more when the lights are off. I really like reading all these pet peeves because most of them bug me too, I just never really thought about it before! But reading this made me think, there is a REASON that movie theaters turn off the lights during movies so why shouldn't we?!?!?
ReplyDeleteI loved this post because you can clearly see how much these things bother you. When I was reading it was almost as if you were right here beside me practically yelling about how much it bothers you to have someone turn on the during or after a movie. Very convincing. However I have a different view on the subject. Yes most times I do prefer to have the lights off during a movie, but there are plenty of reasons why it is good to have the lights on during a movie. For example, sometimes when I am watching a movie, I have other things I need to get done too (this probably means that I shouldn't be watching a movie, but I still do :P) Anyways, by having the light on you can multitask by perhaps doing homework or something while you watch! Just a thought. But for the most part, I totally agree with your position on this matter. :)
ReplyDeleteYeah, I'm right there with you! There's a reason movie theaters are dark - it adds to the atmosphere and effect of the movie. I liked how to the point and blunt you were. You communicated very clearly, I thought, with multiple examples and exclamations.
ReplyDeleteI am with you 100%! The worst is when you specifically set your alarm for a certain time and your dad comes in twenty minutes before it goes off and turns the light on. Those twenty minutes were saved for a reason! The light turning on just adds to my loss of those twenty mins.
ReplyDeleteI also think that when your watching a movie, and someone turns the light on right after it's over it takes away from all the thoughts and emotions running through your mind. You need a little extra time to take in the magic or lack thereof in the movie.
I'm pretty sure that if someone was sitting on the fence about this one, they are now convinced of the evils of lights during a movie. I bet that if this was more prevalent on campus, you could make an OE paper on it. I like how you added the cuddling thing because even if you didn't, everyone was thinking it.
ReplyDeleteOh my heavens! I totally agree with you! Once I was at a theater watching Harry Potter 6, but it was a food theater so there were like a hundred lights on!Since I sat near the back, I could see all the lights in front of me. It was so annoying! I can totally relate to your annoyance with the lights being on. I distracts from the movie and is just plain annoying! You did a good job of getting your feelings across and touched those of us who have the same annoyance as you!
ReplyDeleteWhen I read the title of this, I immediately thought BOTH of these two. The main one that annoys the pooooooooop out of me is whenever people talk during a movie, especially at someone's house or whatnot. Some people will talk, explaining what's going on, or even telling us how the baseball team did.
ReplyDeleteWHO CARES. When we sat down and decided to watch a movie, it's an unwritten contract between the two (or more) that we are going to dedicate the next two hours of our lives to watch, learn, and understand the movie, then discuss after.
Kids these days..
