Week 2 - My Lame Pet Peeve

I do not know about you, but to me it seems like asking someone about their pet peeves is the ultimate survey question. Not even kidding, I swear this question has been on every single “get to know you” worksheet I have ever had to fill out in my life. Truthfully, I never have anything intelligent to say about my pet peeves either, because I can rarely think of any! I guess you could say I am fairly easy going and not much can get under my skin, but for the sake of having nothing to say, I have come up with something. No it is not something like liars, cheaters, or suck ups, although people like that do irritate me slightly. My pet peeve is much lamer, and frankly kind of strange. I would guess you all know the sound, though. Ice Chewers! You know the sound, that annoying crunching and breaking sound as someone chows down on a piece of frozen water. Disgusting. I hate the sound, and more especially I hate the goose bumps that travel through my entire body when I even just think about someone chewing ice. Yes, that is my pet peeve.

I think this pet peeve developed throughout my high school years, because it has not been something that has bothered me my whole life. Actually, I even blame a certain person for causing me to have this pet peeve. I have this friend, and she LOVES to chew ice. On our school basketball and volleyball trips she would always have a huge bucket of ice with her just chomping away in our hotel room after a hard game. It got to the point where I had to leave the room when she was chewing ice. It is not pleasant to be in the same room with a person who sounds like a cow (don’t get me wrong I love my friend to pieces, but sometimes, she can be a cow). You are probably all thinking that this is the lamest pet peeve ever, and I would totally agree that is, but hey, have you ever heard someone chew ice? If you have not I would bet that you would change your mind after you have. Trust me.

Even though I find ice chewers annoying, I would have to say it is totally me who has the problem. If someone wants to chew ice, by all means go ahead and do it. It is not like I can stop them. I am the one responsible for what bothers me and what does not. One of my goals for this year is to overcome my pet peeve of people who chew ice. If I succeed in doing just that, I think I will be virtually pet peeve-less once again, and who doesn’t want that?

  1. Wow, I really loved this one :). Your unique approach and original pet peeve kept me interested and made me laugh. Lol, don't sell yourself so short. That was a really entertaining story and awesome pet peeve! It's cool that I never would have thought of it before. But I admire your resolve to take responsibility and overcome it.

  3. After reading that you have me completely convinced that I shouldn't chew ice anymore! Perhaps you should use this as your opinion editorial? Haha ;)
Ps. Being a big ice chewer I got yelled at many times for chomping like a cow! One of them being from a dental assistant who felt she should inform me that chewing ice is really hard on your teeth. So for anyone else like me who chews ice remember that next time your "chomping away".

  4. Speaking of pet peeves... I hated that you kept claiming yours was lame or boring and everything. It wasn't! You need to have more confidence in what you believe, and your argument, no matter what you are fighting for, will be SO much stronger. Don't worry that other people won't agree because that is just the nature of human beings. We disagree and we argue. If you show confidence in your writing, people will be persuaded by what you have to say. I don't mean to chastise you; I'm simply trying to persuade you. :)

Anyways, I completely agree with your pet peeve. This is what I was going to write about, but since you beat me to it... Oh, and I really don't think it's lame. I think it is quite valid. Especially when the person next to me starts chompin' and chills shoot up my spine and my hair stands on end.

I enjoyed reading your blog. You wrote very well, and kept me interested with your stories and even your points of persuasion. Good writing, just remember, CONFIDENCE! :)

  5. I never thought that I could be sucked into a blog about ice chewing. Guess it shows what a good write is capable of.
I can somewhat agree with you on the ice chewing thing...but its the open mouth chewing that gets me. I am afraid to listen to someone chew ice now though. I have a tendency to develop other people's pet peeves. Like a contagious disease.

  6. People who chew ice also bother me. It isn't like a discrete little noise like chewing gum or food, it is ridiculously loud. Whenever people around me are chewing ice I know I can't make them stop but I'll slip in a little comment that might make them stop like, "Did you know that is really bad for your enamel?" It works pretty well. You should give it a try. But look on the bright side, you should feel pretty fortunate that this is your biggest pet peeve because you don't come across people who chew ice nearly as much as liars, cheaters, or suck ups.

  7. Wow Karen, if only I had known! Im fairly certain that I was a cow more than once on our volleyball trips. Actually now that I think of it I really don't know why I did it, maybe it was because I wasn't supposed to chew ice with my braces on and being the super rebellious person that I am, I did it anyways. Anyways if you ever catch me doing it again don't hesitate to subtly beat me over the head... I'll get the hint.
