Week 2- No! Don't make me do it...

You all know the feeling. The moment when one of your pet peeve is occurring around you. Time freezes. Your palms feel clammy. A cold shiver runs down your spine; altogether, making you appear to have a slight twitch. All of this and more occurs to me when I open the dishwasher and grab the first glass cup. Now don’t think you have my pet peeve all figured out just yet—there’s more.

It’s a rather normal day maybe slightly cold. Your hands are cool not hot or cold just cool, and your mom hears the dish washer shut off. She looks at you, and time freezes. Oh no, you know what’s coming. “Karlee, can you empty the dishwasher?,” she says calmly not understanding the imminent fear in your hands, yet you face it anyway. Quite simply, because she said so. So you open the dishwasher and the steam streams out like a harbinger.

Staring, glaring, and cringing you reach for the first glass cup. It’s the warm sticky feeling of the warm glass as it touches my fingertips, causing that slight irritation to course through me. Once inside my mind it begins getting blown up out of proportion. I can’t help it though that little irritation or sticky feeling the glass has just makes me cringe all over. It’s as though the warm glass takes on an adhesive form that clings to your fingertips. Clinging. Sqeaking. I can’t think of how else to describe it. Simply that warm dry sensation annoying each finger like the sound of nails running down a chalkboard, but instead right at your fingertips. An explosion of awareness right at each little curve, twist, and curl on the end of your philanges.

Is there a solution to this problem? Yes! I discovered it not to long after I realized my strong dislike of the feeling of warm clingy glass. It’s called.... wash by hand... as in old school. To some this may sound appauling. You think, “You have a dishwasher and you’re not using it!” Nevertheless, I would much rather enjoy the feeling of soup, warm water, and bubbles any given day! So I’m avoiding the problem; however, I find it works.

  1. I was impressed by how well you wrote this blog entry! I definitely could feel what you were feeling about your pet peeve, so well done! I can't say that the feeling of warm clingy glass bothers me all that much, but your solution to this problem of yours, hand washing, I agree with. To be honest, I really do not mind washing dishes by hand, for the most part I do it anyways, then throw the dishes in the dishwasher to make sure they are extra clean. I mean, as long as you don't let the dishes pile up forever, washing dishes by hand is really an easy task. And if one of your pet peeves is the feeling of the glass right after you pull it out of the dishwasher, then hand washing dishes may just be the perfect answer! Good work!

  2. I really like this blog entry! I can really tell that this pet peeve irritates you. It never irritated me before, but listening to the way that you described it, made me cringe! However, I think that I will stick to putting my dishes into the dishwasher. I hate doing dishes by hand, no matter how lazy that sounds it really is one of my least favorite chores. I'd rather scrub the toilet than do a bunch of dishes by hand. It takes so long and all the chunks of food swimming around the water make me feel sick. But whatever works best for you is what counts!

  3. Karlee, this blog post was so well written! It is almost like you made a story out of it, and I was very sucked in! Very descriptive. I think I would have to disagree with you though on this one :P. The dishwasher is a great invention, why not use it! Have you considered the dry hands and cracked fingers that result from having to wash dishes by hand all the time? Not fun. On the other hand though, washing dishes is a way to get warm on a cold winters day, so I guess there are pros and cons to both. Still, your post was very specific in your pet peeve, and I enjoyed reading it immensely! :) You are a great writer my friend, a great writer. You got mad skills :P.

  4. This was really great! You really conveyed how much the newly cleaned dishes bother you. Your descriptions were awesome and really helped me to visualize the dishes, and almost to feel them. Your vocab really helped me as a reader to enjoy reading what you had to say. It kept me interested and made me want to continue reading. I liked how you kind of left it up to our imaginations to figure out your pet peeve, and then gave us all the details towards the end. Probably not the best approach to trying to persuade an audience to see things your way, but I liked it. :)

  5. Karlee, I agree with all the other comments about how wonderfully descriptive your writing is. Warm glasses straight from a dishwasher is honestly something I've never thought about before, much less been bothered by; you were able to anticipate that your audience might not have that same pet peeve, or at least hasn't thought about it consciously, and provided all the detail to put us directly in that situation and feel the same way you do. And, you even have a solution to your problem, which is great. Much better than just making your younger sibling unload the dishwasher all the time or something . . . :)
