Week 4- POP Goes the Weasel

POP! We’ve all heard that sound. But pop is not just a sound that a balloon makes as a pen strikes its core and it is not just a fizzy drink. (I must assure you, that I have NEVER called soda, pop.) Pop usually denotes a short, explosive sound. But it is also used informally in situations such as when you say, “That’ll be $50 a pop!” Granted not many people say that much anymore, but it could still happen. This word is not only full of unique uses, but it is fun to say. Try it: put your lips together and say, “pop!” It is quite addicting to say. It comes out so naturally. The sound it makes as it escapes your mouth is quite pleasant to the ears.
It is also a very descriptive word too. When you hear it in a sentence it brings the sentence alive. You can hear the sound of the wood popping as the fire burns it. You can hear the sound of the balloons popping as they rise into the atmosphere. It adds texture to the sentence where there may be none. It could just be, “The wood burned as the fire blazed.” But adding pop gives it the texture to provide a visual effect. You can visualize this sentence much better, “The wood popped as the fire blazed.” The word pop allows you to see the wood burning and popping as the fire blazes.
This word is just so exciting! One of my favorite uses is when it is used to describe a quick jaunt to a location. Such as, “I’ll just pop in and take a look.” The word pop just adds an exciting quality to the sentence. It just makes you want to jump up and smile! It reminds me of the actions we do as sunbeams; we sing, “Jesus wants me for a suuuun beam!” and we shoot up out of our seats. The action to me could be described as popping up out of our seats. Whenever you read the word pop you just can’t help but feel upbeat. Certain words give out certain vibes. Words like desolate and torment just makes you feel depressed. But a word like pop makes you suddenly feel energized and excited. The next time you hear or read the word pop, pause and see if you feel more excited or energized. So give it a try, “POP!”

  1. It is funny how you can be so upbeat and happy so early in the morning, I am still trying to wake up. Pop really is a cool word but I have never really stopped and realized how many uses it has, there truly are a bunch. I always use pop to describe soda, its just how I grew up i guess. I like the point you made about how pop gives sentences texture, I never though of it that way.

  2. I love this post because it is actually about a word that we hear quite a bit! You gave tons of reasons why pop was such a cool word, lots of which I have never thought of before! What I like most about the word pop though is that it is a palindrome. It says the same thing backwards and forwards! So there is another thing to add to your list of why the word pop is awesome :).

  5. When I hear the word pop, it makes me think of popcorn, which makes me think of the smell of popcorn, which makes me think of movie theaters, which I love! Yeah, I think that I look the word pop as well, just because it makes me think of so many different things that I love! And of course because it is so fun to say.

  6. Wow, this is probably the happiest post I have seen yet. Pop is such an awesome word, it is funny when people freak out when you say that word rather then soda. I have grown up with my family referring to carbonated drinks as pop. Pop itself is such an awesome word. Great job by adding different contexts of the word. Really good post!
