Week 4 - You want something for nothing? This word is for you!

My favorite word is undoubtedly the word “free.” Seriously, don’t you just get so excited when you hear that word? I know I do. Anything free is just awesome! Free food, free t-shirts, free anything! It’s pretty much like Christmas, but better. Well maybe not better, but close.

The word free can have SO many different meaning too. We can say free as in enjoying personal rights and freedoms, we can say free when something is not being occupied (like a bathroom stall), or we can even use free when talking about sports! In basketball a foul shot is also called a “free throw,” which is basically an opportunity to get more points without even really having to work for them! See what I mean, free is just a happy word, with so many positive meanings. I can’t think of one negative use of this word, so if you can, please let me know.

I think if the word free had a smell it would smell like fresh, homemade bread. There is seriously no better smell than that. It would taste deliciously sweet I am sure. As for the texture, that is kind of a strange question. But I am hoping that if I do ever get to taste the word free that it would have a texture somewhat like that of smooth creamy chocolate. I doubt this will happen though because you can’t eat words, well not literally anyways.

So I wish I could say that I have had a lot of experiences with the word free, as in getting lots of free stuff, but I have not. Maybe that is why I get so excited when I see or hear the words “free ____!” On the few occasions I have gotten free things, though, it has made my whole day. For example, when I first came to BYU I had to go and open a bank account, and guess what—

they gave me a free t-shirt for it! Booya! I wore that t-shirt the whole next day just because I was so happy it was free. And speaking of free t-shirts, I also got a free football t-shirt from that bank. So moral of the story is I love the bank now. I still think my favorite thing is getting free food though. So if any of you want to get on my good side, you know what to do.

So that is it, my favorite word in a nutshell. I hope after reading this you are all as excited about this word as I am. Free is wonderful. So next time you get something for free, think about how happy it makes you, and who knows, it might just become your favorite word too!

  1. Ha this made me laugh. I also like the meaning that the word "free" brings with it, although the word itself is a bit boring to say. If only there was a really exciting word that meant "free" that we could say instead, because it would make everything that comes with it just THAT much more exciting! This word is one reason why I love BYU so much though! I have gotten more free stuff here than I have in my entire life!

  2. Haha I love this! My family has a little inside joke type of thing. We always say that "free" is our favorite four letter word that starts with an "f". Maybe a little inappropriate... But it's true! Free is absolutely wonderful! Do you have a Starving Student Card? I got one for free because I work in the bookstore, but what is almost better than getting it for free is the fact that it has so much free stuff on it! You might want to consider getting one. ;)

  3. The funny thing about "free" is that there is very little in life that is truly "free." And that "free" is just one letter away from "fee," which, trust me, that bank will charge you plenty of. Not to be a downer or anything . . . :)

I like all the different meanings you've found from this word. It's a very interesting cultural word. You could write an entire essay on the word "free" and all its connotations.

  4. Free is actually my favorite price. Although free is usually accompanied by "buy one get one" or "with the purchase of such and such", free is free...

True story: I was driving to school one day and at a stoplight there was a ratty looking guy in dirty clothes and poorly groomed at the corner. He went up to a few cars, not saying anything, and the people shooed him off. When he came to my car, I rolled down my window to give him a dollar, but he denied it and gave me a crisp $20 bill. Attached to it was a small slip of paper saying "Give some passion: it's free" and it had a website explaining this experiment he was doing for some sociology class or something.

    That's my 3 cents.

  6. Lol, this was very entertaining and well thought out. I especially loved the line: "So, moral of the story is I love the bank now." Little random, but still relevant lines like that add dynamics and voice. I love how your distinct voice shone through the entire thing, it made it that much funner to read.
